The ONE thing to do to get on top of things...
DO you find you start something and quickly run out of willpower? Does sitting down to write Christmas cards or put clean clothes away sometimes just feel overwhelming? You’re not alone.
How can you create and maintain a habit that you know makes you feel good. Here’s how…
Let’s take the Christmas card analogy. You think about it. You think about how long it’s going to take. You don’t have that kind of time. You start thinking that you’re leaving it too late. You’ll never get them all done. Where’s the addresses anyway. And all of this leads to total inaction at best and guilt-ridden self-frustration at worst.
So what’s the secret?
The secret is so simple that you’re likely to roll your eyes but hear me out. The trick or the inner-critic hack is to start super small. What am I talking about? I’ll say it again the secret is to start really, really small. Let me give you some examples.
Want to write Christmas cards. Tell yourself that you just have to put the Christmas cards and pen on the table. And that is ALL you have to do. If you do that you are WINNING. Chances are that you’ll be so buoyed by this win that you might sit down and write a few. But the key thing is that you don’t have to.
You can apply it to all areas of your life. Want to start a journaling practise? Tell yourself that you just need to open your journal and pick your pen. That is ALL. Want to go for a run this week? Put on your gear and that’s your win.
The thing is by starting really small, and keeping things really small we start to experience a feeling of success. You’ll be amazed how often you end up doing more that you had intended.
The ONE thing to do to get on top of things is to start SUPER small. AND DO NOT WRITE CHRISTMAS CARDS UNLESS IT MAKES YOU FEEL GOOD. Mix it up. Write and record a hilarious Christmas poem. Send ‘I love you voice msgs’, create a 2020 skit. You get the jist. Whatever you do do it your way. Life is too short not to.
Have you started any new habits in 2020? what made them stick?
I’d love to know.
